In episode 7, I’m lamenting the days when my skill in the server room were more respected than my skill in the board room. Pursuing the VMware VCP has provided some clarity to where I’m at in the career and my deep technical knowledge about the in and outs of implementing and supporting technology at the actual “keyboard” level.
If you are interested in virtualization of course you should know what a vswitch is. 😉
I don’t think it’s about the certification, it’s about the knowledge. You have to understand the architecture. That is why you need to see how different vendors do things. Most of the times they are doing the same things, but in different ways. It’s about recognizing them and knowing the advantages and disadvantages then you can make informed decisions or give informed advice.
The biggest problem with knowledge these days, is that everything is changing very rapidly. Have you looked at networking lately, OpenFlow, overlay networks, SDN, NFV ?
To get a grasp of them you have to understand all of them and you have no idea what things will be widely adopted, the whole industry is in a state of flux. If you are looking for a subject to write about, there is more than enough to write about there.
I think on the networking side I’ve not seen any player delivering the solution I want to see. But I’ve put so much thought into it, I know which protocols or implementations I would want to extend and how to run it in production.
Now all I need to do is convince some people to implement what I want (not gonna happen I guess, although I did email some people). I can program so if I had months of time I could do it myself, but who has months of time ?
And no, I don’t think I’ve watched a video 12 times. Or more than 2 times for that matter. 🙂
